“Drugs are the cause of immeasurable human suffering,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres in his message for this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse. “Evidence-based drug prevention programs can protect individuals and communities alike, while dismantling illicit economies that profit from human suffering.”

“This is what has driven the work of the foundation since its inception,” says Jessica Hochman, executive director of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World. “We want to empower youth and adults through fact-based education to make the informed decision to live a drug-free life.”

“Reaching one million Facts about drugs “Distributing the brochures was a big challenge,” said a volunteer from Non à la Drogue. “But we were warmly welcomed by fans at the Olympic venues and by people we met on the street. Shop owners recognized the importance of distributing these brochures to their customers and were keen to participate in our outreach efforts. We accepted the challenge and it was great to achieve this goal.”

“I have heard so many poignant stories from people of all ages and backgrounds. Almost everyone we have spoken to has suffered personally or experienced the devastating effects of substance abuse on a loved one or friend,” said another volunteer. “It was encouraging to see how many people took our leaflets seriously and wanted to contribute to our campaign.”

Church of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard pointed to the role that drug abuse plays in the breakdown of the social fabric, writing: “Research has shown that drugs are the most destructive element in our culture today.”

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World was established in 2006 to serve as a primary distributor of educational materials and to develop new materials to meet the challenges of ever-changing drug trends. The Foundation has grown to a network of approximately 200 offices around the world. With the support of the Church of Scientology and Scientologists, it makes the secular Truth About Drugs program and related materials available free of charge to anyone who wants to do something about this pressing problem.

Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nonprofit, community-based organization that provides factual information about drugs to youth and adults so they can make informed choices and live drug-free lives. Through a worldwide network of volunteers, millions of drug prevention brochures have been distributed and tens of thousands of drug education events have been held in some 180 countries. These materials and activities have helped people around the world learn about the destructive side effects of drugs and thus make the decision not to use them. Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nongovernmental organization (NGO) in special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
