Duke students are eligible for a Durham County library card

Duke students and Durham residents are eligible for a free Durham County library card, which can be picked up at Perkins Library on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Students who present only a Duke ID card will receive a student card that allows them to check out 10 items each. The card grants access to all library locations in the Durham County Library system, including thousands of online resources.

Anyone who also presents proof of residency in Durham will receive a full library card that allows users to borrow up to 50 items at once.

The free online resources are available through the Libby app, which includes thousands of e-books, audiobooks, magazines and movies.

The Durham County Main Library on Roxboro Street is the closest location to the Duke campus. It is open Monday through Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The library is closed on Sundays.

Library visitors can access Maker + STEAM services, which include 3D printing, digital design software, arts and crafts supplies, robotics, coding, and photography. Additionally, a $40,000 state grant enabled the library to purchase a modern laser cutter, mobile battery banks, and 3D scanners.

“The State Library’s support allows us to improve accessibility and promote information literacy by offering these innovative technologies free of charge to Durham County library cardholders and our outreach partners,” wrote Caroline Flory, a librarian at Maker + STEAM and project manager for the grant, in a July 9 CBS-17 article.

The Durham County Library offers regular programs for community members such as scavenger hunts, book clubs, yoga sessions and workshops. It also offers a humanities program designed to bring together writers and scholars from across the country through music, art, history, religion, culture and literature events. The events – funded by the Durham Library Foundation – are often held in partnership with local humanities organizations and nonprofits.

Durham County Library locations offer meeting and study rooms that can be booked online.
