East Bay shopping center takes large Japanese grocery store as new anchor

EMERYVILLE – A well-known Japanese supermarket is set to become a major addition to an East Bay shopping center that is currently undergoing extensive renovation and modernization.

Tokyo Central, a Japan-based grocery chain, will occupy a large building at Bay Street Emeryville, a major shopping, dining and entertainment center in Emeryville.

According to CenterCal Properties, the principal owner and developer of the East Bay commercial center, the supermarket will offer a wide selection of high-quality imported Japanese goods such as groceries, made-to-order and grab-and-go meal trays, health products and other specialty items.

“Tokyo Central is the ultimate destination for Japanese specialty and lifestyle items,” said Kazuhiro Matsumoto, president of Pan Pacific Retail Management USA. “We are excited to bring the quality and value of Japan to such a diverse location as Bay Street Emeryville.” Pan Pacific owns Tokyo Central.

According to CenterCal, the new store will have a total area of 3,700 square meters and is scheduled to open in 2025.

“The redesigned Bay Street area will provide residents and visitors with a unique cultural shopping experience,” said Scott Bohrer, vice president of development for Bay Street Emeryville.

Tokyo Central’s only other Bay Area store is in Cupertino, making the Emeryville location the grocer’s first store in the East Bay.

“The addition of Tokyo Central completes our team’s vision to provide the surrounding community with an essential facility for everyday needs,” Bohrer said.

CenterCal Properties took ownership of Bay Street Emeryville in 2021.

Since then, the real estate company has initiated extensive redevelopment measures to reposition the retail center to remain profitable despite massive changes in consumer shopping behavior as a result of the rise of online retail.

Bay Street Emeryville has added 10 new restaurants and eateries, including Fogo De Chao, Flores Cocina & Bar, Mumu Hot Pot and Pippal Regional Indian.

The mall, with its shops and restaurants, has been expanded to include unique entertainment options such as Tipsy Putt and Sandbox VR. There is also an AMC movie theater in the center.

“Our team has worked to create an enriching experience for our customers and the surrounding community,” Bohrer said. “We are excited to introduce the new Bay Street Emeryville to the entire region.”
