BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (WAFB) – It has been a week since the first day of school and the start of a brand new school year for students and staff in the East Baton Rouge Parish school system.

Superintendent LaMont Cole joined Matt Williams and Liz Koh on “9News This Morning” to provide an update on the district’s school bus transportation issues and some improvements he has seen since last year.

“We are continually improving every day,” said the superintendent.

According to Cole, there were 80 school bus routes in operation at this time last school year. On Wednesday, August 14, 309 routes were on time.

In addition, the superintendent said there were 87 vacancies this time last year. However, as of Wednesday, there were only 20.

The school system is working to fill both teaching and bus driving positions, and members of law enforcement are also encouraged to apply.
