Edison’s Minnie B. Veal Center receives million for expansion project

EDISON, NJ – The Minnie B. Veal Community Center in Edison received $1 million in federal community projects funding to develop it into a center that will better serve the city’s senior residents.

Funding was secured by Congressman Frank Pallone.

The expansion will boost the community and create a central location where seniors can participate in wellness programs, social gatherings, educational programs and classes, and recreational activities under one roof.

“This expansion is not just about adding more space – it’s about creating a welcoming place where our seniors can feel supported and connected,” Pallone said.

“By providing easier access to essential services and opportunities to learn new skills and make lasting friendships, we are helping to build a community that values and supports its older residents.”

Currently, the MBVCC is not equipped to meet the needs of seniors.

The new facility will also introduce technology education programs to provide older residents with the skills they need to use computers, smartphones and other digital tools.

Built in the 1990s, MBVCC is Edison’s only dedicated senior center. Located in the southeast part of town, it struggles to serve the growing senior population due to limited space and location.

Many seniors in northern Edison neighborhoods must travel more than eight miles through heavy traffic to reach downtown, making it difficult for them to access essential services.

“Our valued older population will benefit tremendously from the creation of more space, services and engagement opportunities,” said Mayor Sam Joshi.

“With this funding, we can ensure the continuous enrichment of our senior community at this central location.”

Pallone requested funding for this project in the budget law for fiscal year 2025.

Each year, members of the U.S. House of Representatives can request funding for community projects in their district to direct federal funds to the areas of greatest need in their community.
