Ohio State has officially announced its captains for the 2024 season; four seniors were honored with this award.
Wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, running back TreVeyon Henderson, defensive end Jack Sawyer and linebacker Cody Simon were elected team captains by their teammates.
“The good news is we have a great group of leaders,” Ryan Day said in an Ohio State press release. “Just because you’re not a captain doesn’t mean you’re not a leader. You’re still a leader. Leadership is something you have to earn, and many of you have earned leadership. There are a lot of captains on this team. The players have done a great job of tuning in.”
Each of the four announced that they would return to Columbus for their final years despite having the chance to play in the NFL, but instead they returned to the Buckeyes for one final season.
Egbuka returns as the top receiver in the room and hopes for a comeback year after dealing with some injuries last year. He’s hoping for his second 1,000-yard season after finishing 2022 with 1,151 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Henderson enters a year where he’ll be backed up by junior Quinshon Judkins, arguably the best one-two punch out of the backfield in the country. He’s also battled some injuries in recent years but has 2,745 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns in three seasons.
Sawyer was instrumental in bringing many seniors back for another season and led the offense after finishing the 2023 season very strong with 7 ½ tackles for a loss and five sacks in the final three games of the year against Minnesota, Michigan and Missouri.
Simon begins his first year as a mike linebacker, taking over from Tommy Eichenberg, who was the team’s captain last year. He didn’t start in 2023 but earned plenty of playing time, especially when Eichenberg missed a few games late in the season due to injury. He also received Ohio State’s “Block O” jersey on Saturday.
