Emergency crews repair sinkhole in Port Chester, NY

PORT CHESTER – Emergency repair crews were working Thursday morning to repair an apparent sinkhole ahead of heavy rains expected in the lower Hudson Valley Friday afternoon.

Port Chester officials discovered the sinkhole, which formed on Regent Street near the intersection with Clermont Avenue after a portion of the Bulkley storm sewer collapsed beneath the street.

The exact cause of the sewer collapse is unknown, said village Superintendent Stuart Rabin. Rabin said repairs are currently being made to the sewer in preparation for the upcoming storm on Friday.

“We cannot confirm whether this week’s storm was the cause of the damage,” Rabin told reporters, “but it certainly helped us identify the spot where the road collapsed and sank.”

Rabin said repairing the system will include excavation, removing debris and replacing the natural stone tunnel/waterway with a concrete replacement to allow stormwater to continue to drain away.

“We have planned a much more extensive stormwater infrastructure for this part of the village and have the approval for it,” Rabin said.

According to the National Weather Service, Port Chester received 2.2 inches of rain as a result of Tuesday’s storm.
