FALL RIVER – Heritage State Park is hosting Arts in the Park in August.

Here’s what’s happening at Heritage State Park in August:

Dyeing to wear: Dyeing for textile art

August 3 and 31, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., Overlook Visitor Center

In this interactive workshop, each participant will create a wearable work of art. Classes will be accompanied by storytelling from artist Rhonda Fazio. The genius of photography by Lewis Wickes Hine: “Reinterpreted” paintings by artist Sheila Oliveira

11 August, 1-2pm (open until 14 October); Visitor Centre

On August 11th there will be a special presentation by artist Sheila Oliveira. Inspired by the photography of Lewis Wickes Hine, Oliveira has reinterpreted his vision in oil paintings based on the original photographs.

“Elections in Massachusetts: The surprising story of elections in the Bay State”

August 1 to September 14, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Visitor Center Exhibition Hall

This exhibit examines Massachusetts’ role in shaping the nation’s democracy. Historical documents on display include records related to the Massachusetts Constitutional Convention of 1820, the right of Native Americans and African Americans (if they were male landowners) to vote before the Civil War, the history of mail-in voting, and more. This exhibit is on loan from the Commonwealth Museum in Boston and the Department of State.

“Rightfully Hers: American Women and the Right to Vote”

August 1 to September 14, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Visitor Center Exhibition Hall

This exhibition highlights the tireless struggle of various activists throughout U.S. history to secure the right to vote for all American women. The exhibition was created by the National Archives Foundation.

Faces of Fall River

Daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., exhibition hall of the visitor center

Explore a selection of historic Fall River photographs. This exhibition highlights the work of Lewis Wickes Hine, whose photographs of children in Fall River cotton mills helped mobilize the nation against child labor.

Stop by the visitor center counter every day.

Take advantage of a beautiful summer day and stroll through the park on a journey through history. This 30-minute walk connects the park’s signposts. Information is available at reception.

This short walking tour introduces the landmarks of Heritage State Park named after pioneers. Information is available at the front desk.

Creation Station Activities

Daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Visitor Center lobby

Stop by the visitor center and pick up a unique coloring sheet featuring moments from Fall River’s history. Learn about textiles and calico, or even weave a row on the community loom. For all ages.

Storywalk: “When you plant a seed” by Kadir Nelson

Daily from morning to evening along the promenade

The lesson of this book is that you reap what you sow. When you plant a seed of goodness, it grows.

Storywalk: “Quequechan – the forgotten river” by Jeanne L. Prevost

Daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Visitor Center lobby

Learn the history of the Quequechan River, the river that gave Fall River its name. This book is by Fall River native Jeanna L. Prevost and illustrated by Linda Crockett. The Storywalk project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont, and developed in partnership with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Storywalk is a registered service mark of Ferguson.

Where is the Heritage State Park Visitor Center?

The visitor center is located at 100 Davol St. in the Capt. Thomas J. Hudner Jr. Memorial Building.

Free parking is available in the DCR parking lot at 5 Water St.

All programs are free and open to the public.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.
