Exotic animals teach wildlife at Rutland fair

RUTLAND, Vermont (WCAX) – Organizers of the Vermont State Fair are expecting a large crowd for the final day of the fair, but a new attraction featured a few different animals than those seen at most state fairs.

The Wildlife Adventure Center, a Florida zoo that focuses on wildlife education and conservation, was part of the Vermont State Fair for the first time this year.

Vermonters were able to see, touch and learn about the zoo’s reptiles, sloths and other animals that travel the country to advance scientific research as part of wider conservation efforts.

The zoo hopes to reach people who cannot visit its Florida location and give them the opportunity to learn about wildlife.

“Sometimes education can be dry and we want to make sure that the education has an impact on people that they will remember for the rest of their lives because it’s about making a difference for the animals. So we need to provide some exposure, some thrills, but do it in a safe environment and in a way that makes a powerful and profound difference for conservation,” said Jim DeBerry of the Wildlife Adventure Center.

The fair ends on Saturday evening with a performance by Tyler Hubbard in front of the grandstand.
