Families at Lydia House get their hair cut before going to school

OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – This week, children across the metropolis are packing their backpacks and heading back to school. The first thing they have to do is make sure they look good.

A Benson-based hair salon, Heavi Hitters, volunteered his time to ensure that the families living at Lydia House can start the school year off right.

“We have people in our community who give their time and volunteer and provide really great resources and opportunities for our children and their families,” said Daniel Anderson, assistant director of Lydia House.

Heavi Hitters worked with businesses across Omaha and the country to organize the event. In addition to haircuts, students received backpacks, school supplies and a hot meal.

“Looking good makes you feel good,” says owner Shannon Jackson. “It’s definitely something that’s needed, especially with kids and adolescents. Their peers matter, classrooms matter, their friends matter, and we just love making people feel good.”

Anderson said events like this one at Lydia House can make up for a lack of resources or opportunities.

“Education is one of the keys to breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty,” Anderson said. “So if we can do that for our children, we know we can have a lasting impact on them.”

Jackson said she hopes to set an example for students by hosting such events.

“I hope they remember what it’s like when someone gives to them and that they’re inclined to give to someone else,” Jackson said.
