PRINCE FREDERICK, Maryland – On December 4, 2023, Angel Manuel Jimenez died while in custody at the Calvert County Detention Center. Despite numerous emails, phone calls, and a formal request from the family’s attorney, questions remain unanswered.

That’s all the family knows eight months after Jimenez’s death. On November 30, 2023, Jimenez was pulled over. The traffic stop revealed that Jimenez had a warrant for child support. However, a Maryland Case Search check found no charges against Jimenez. Jimenez was arrested and taken to the detention center.

On December 4, 2023, just four days later, the family received a call from Sergeant Simms and was informed that Mr. Jimenez had passed away. During that phone call, the family was informed that Jimenez had died of heart complications. According to the family, they were not aware of any health issues that 50-year-old Jimenez was allegedly suffering from.

On July 26, 2024, the family was informed by the coroner that Jimenez’s death was classified as a “coercive homicide.”

To this day, the family is hurt and confused by the lack of information and transparency. The family is demanding that their questions be answered and the public be informed of their devastating loss. Jimenez was a loving uncle, brother and son. He was a self-employed, certified electrician with a bright future that ended prematurely. Jimenez grew up in the Bronx, NY and spent part of his time in Puerto Rico.

The family has not seen a police report of the traffic stop or a copy of the alleged arrest warrant. The family demanded to know the probable cause for the initial traffic stop. The vehicle Jimenez was driving is missing and his personal belongings have not been released.

The family is demanding bodycam footage of the traffic stop, detention center admission forms detailing his medical condition at the time of admission, and surveillance video of the admission area.

This is a developing story that The BayNet will continue to follow.
