Family of deceased WWII veteran visits Belgium for Camp White Tie Remembrance Weekend

MONROEVILLE, Ind. (WPTA) – A Monroeville family is traveling to Belgium to commemorate World War II and their family’s personal connection to it.

The family of late World War II veteran Donald W. Kiracofe gathered at Fort Wayne International Airport on Wednesday to begin their trip to Belgium for Camp White Tie Remembrance Weekend.

After their arrival in Belgium in 2022, they will meet again a young man who has returned Kiracofe’s dog tags from the Second World War.

They will also participate in five days of events, including a World War II book launch and reception, a ceremony and unveiling of a new World War II memorial, an exhibition of relics found at Camp White Tie, a tour of the Battle of the Bulge sites, and a tour of Brussels, Belgium.

The Kiracofe family hopes that Camp White Tie Remembrance Weekend will lead to a deeper understanding of Donald W. Kiracofe’s service in World War II.

The event ends on Tuesday, August 27. Following the trip, 21Alive plans to provide further information about the experiences.
