Family of fatal accident victim can come to terms with death – but still has questions

The families of 19-year-old Jerry Choisy, 18-year-old Geovany Alexis and 17-year-old Marcus Griffin are finally finding some much-needed closure. Enrique Hernandez, the driver of a car crash that killed the two, was arrested and charged Tuesday.

WPTV’s Michael Hoffman spoke with Marcus Griffin’s family about their feelings of closure and unimaginable loss.

“I’m so glad they didn’t give up on my son,” Marcus Griffin’s mother Hoffman said by phone.

The family is happy with the outcome but still mourns their loss.

“This could have been prevented,” said Griffin’s uncle, Edward Gardener.

Gardener remembers his nephew as a talkative and ambitious young man who had his eyes on the future.

“He was an entrepreneur, you know,” Gardener said. “So he was looking forward to a life of great deeds.”

Gardener spoke to us through tears of grief as he comes to terms with the untimely death of his nephew.

“If that’s how I feel, imagine his mother,” Gardener told Hoffman. “Imagine what his mother is going through. I can’t imagine that being my child.”

Griffin’s mother tells Hoffman that months after her son’s death, she still has questions for the driver.

“I would ask him why,” she said. “Why didn’t he stop the car?”

Gardener told Hoffman that his nephew was in that car driving home from school and found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. He says he’s using that situation to teach his children a valuable lesson.

“I told them, under no circumstances are they to ride with anyone,” Gardener said. “If you have to take an Uber, if you have to wait for me, whatever you have to do, never ride with anyone.”
