Farmers remain concerned about drought in Ohio

A southwest Ohio farmer is concerned about the drought across the state.

Eric Tipton says it is unusually dry.

“I think the big question right now is whether we’ve had enough rainfall to fill the crop,” he says. “I think that’s the scary part because there are a lot of signs of stress and I think we had the potential for a good crop.”

According to the latest report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, corn is rated 49 percent good to excellent, with 90 percent in the dough stage. Soybeans are rated 48 percent good to excellent, with 95 percent setting hulls.

He says his area is not yet listed as a concern on the drought monitor.

“We’re in Fayette County,” he says. “I’m in the far north of Fayette County, and the last time I checked, the impacts haven’t been as bad as, say, the southern parts of Fayette County up to Circleville and some of those places. I don’t think we’re doing that bad.”

The third alfalfa cut is 50 percent complete and the third hay cut is 50 percent complete.

The moisture in the topsoil is 25 percent to more than sufficient and the moisture in the subsoil is 29 percent to more than sufficient.
