Fire devastates auto repair shop in Craven County, investigation ongoing

A fire in Craven County leaves severe damage at an auto repair shop.

News12’s Chris Young was on scene until firefighters put out the flames.

If you look behind me, you can see that the front door of Full Speed, Incorporated has been destroyed and the sides of the building are scorched by the fire.

The commercial garage is located on West Grantham Road, off Old Airport Road.

Ira Whitford, Craven County’s deputy emergency management director, told me the fire started at 11 a.m. this morning and it took firefighters more than an hour and a half to put it out.

The crews remained on site for another two hours to extinguish the fires and begin investigating the cause of the fire.

Neighbors told me they heard several explosions.

Whitford says several cars caught fire.

Ira Whitford, Craven County’s deputy chief of emergency services, said: “It was burning virtually from one end of the building to the other. There were several vehicles inside, so the explosions inside were likely caused by the burning vehicles. However, the fire is currently under investigation and we are trying to determine the cause of the incident.”

In total, Whitford told me, four different fire departments helped fight the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but we will update you on air and online with any information we receive.
