WAYNE — A mother and her seven children escaped a fire that destroyed their home at 78 Berry Road early Wednesday morning. The home belonged to Vicki Tully.

One of the children, Haven, 15, woke the rest of the family when the fire broke out and helped them evacuate. No injuries were reported.

The first investigators on the scene concluded that it was probably an accident, said Wayne Fire Chief Taylor Stevenson. The fire broke out in a garage adjacent to the house.

The Wayne Fire Department received a 911 call at 12:56 a.m. and cleared the scene at 7:40 a.m. Fire department partners in Readfield, Fayette, Mount Vernon, Vienna, Winthrop and Livermore Falls also responded to the fire.

A nearby stable that housed the family’s three horses was not damaged by the fire. The horses were able to escape from the stable during the fire but were later found unharmed. The family’s two goats, three of their seven dogs, three of their six barn cats, and one of their three house cats survived the fire.

Stevenson said a local resident used an excavator to help clear parts of the building while the fire was still raging, a common practice in older buildings that are unlikely to recover from the blaze. Although the fire started in the garage, it spread to the rest of the house and was difficult to extinguish without damaging the building.

A GoFundMe campaign set up by Amy MacMillan to support the Tully family’s recovery had raised more than $4,600 from 67 donations as of Thursday afternoon.
