Five free and inexpensive things to do with the whole family in Middle Tennessee | Community

This weekend, the best little festival for families is happening in Centennial Park. It’s worth spending at least an hour or two there—it really is a good place for a first show for even your littlest kids. There are a few more outdoor options this week: head to Lascassas for the Watermelon Festival, or head north for an outdoor concert at the White House. The Nashville Public Library has a few great offerings this week, too: two on our list are the Mommy & Me Barbie Workshop, where you can work on your braiding skills, and the other is a ballet story time, which is great for your youngest kids.

As part of our series on free and cheap things to do with the family, here is our weekly roundup of places to spend time together over the next week:

Kidsville in Centennial Park

The three-day, family-friendly Musicians Corner allows caregivers and parents to bring children of all ages to enjoy fun, fitness, arts and crafts, and educational musical meet and greet guests and activities in Kidsville. The concert series begins Thursday evening and celebrates its 15th anniversary this year in Centennial Park. In addition to the kids’ area and music, there will be several vendors and food trucks on site.

“Mommy & Me” Barbie Workshop

The Richland Park branch of the Nashville Public Library will host a Mommy & Me Barbie workshop on August 31 at 2 p.m. Kids and their parents can bring their own Barbies to learn how to braid unique hairstyles and bond in a free and safe environment. The hour-long event is best suited for children ages 3 to 7. No registration is required, but participants must bring their own Barbie to participate.

Music under the stars

The Music Under the Stars summer concert series is scheduled for this weekend at White House Municipal Park. Concerts begin at 6 p.m. on August 31 with the band The Pak rounding out the final installment in the series. Food trucks will be on site, but people are also welcome to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets and snacks.

Watermelon Festival

The Lascassas Farmers Market Watermelon Festival celebrates all things watermelon on August 31st from 8am to noon. There will be live music, watermelon slushies, sand art and fresh watermelon, as well as all the usual goodies that come with the market.

Nashville Ballet presents “Sleeping Beauty” – Story Time

Take your little ones on the morning of August 29 to join a teacher from the Nashville Ballet as they tell the story of an evil fairy’s curse on a beautiful young princess who is doomed to sleep until love’s kiss breaks the spell. The Bordeaux branch of the Nashville Public Library will host children who are invited to dance through the story of Sleeping Beauty and “learn how ballet’s beautiful music and movement have made it a timeless, beloved story.”
