A group of car experts have selected the best starter motors for new drivers that won’t cost a fortune to insure.
With car insurance premiums rising, it’s more important than ever for new drivers to find a vehicle they can afford.
According to experts, the average cost of fully comprehensive insurance has risen to £511, and for new drivers this amount can be significantly higher.
Fortunately, used car gurus at Swansway Motor Group, a family-run car dealership brand based in Cheshire, have exclusively introduced Sun Motors to five of the cheapest motors that fall into the lowest Insurance groups.
Volkswagen Up!
The VW Up! was a city car of the German brand that was produced from 2011 until last year – then its production was discontinued.
Incredibly popular and affordable to buy – the cheapest variant costs just £8,975 new – the Up! offers a wealth of equipment including air conditioning, electric windows, central locking and a smartphone-based media system.
It’s also a great option for drivers looking for cheap insurance, as most Up! Models have a 1.0-litre petrol engine, which puts them in one of the lowest insurance groups available.
The experts added: “This compact yet surprisingly spacious car offers excellent value for money. What’s more, it’s small and tall and comes with Bluetooth, making it perfect for city driving.”
Seat Ibiza
The evergreen According to Swansway Motor Group, “Seat Ibiza combines youthful design with functionality.”
The popular compact car, which has been available in various versions since 1984, can also be an affordable drive for novice drivers if you opt for the 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.
In addition, the latest generation of the Ibiza – first launched in 2017 – offers generous equipment at a price that undercuts that of its sibling, the Volkswagen Polo.
Peugeot108
Described as “both stylish and affordable,” the small Peugeot 108 could be worth considering.
Although it starts in the slightly higher insurance group 6, its 1.0-litre petrol engine ensures that running costs remain low.
The experts added: “If you want a little more flair, consider the version with an electric fabric roof, which gives a convertible feel without significantly increasing insurance costs.”
Skoda Superb
If you are looking for a more “mature driving experience”, new drivers may want to consider the Skoda Fabia.
The Fabia is known for its reliability and comfort and offers “a refined driving experience at a low price”.
The Fabia has been produced by the Czech brand since 1999 and is available in various versions – as a hatchback, station wagon and notchback sedan.
However, tightwads should opt for the model with a 1.0-litre petrol engine to secure lower insurance premiums.
Hyundai i10
The stylish Hyundai i10 is the epitome of a modern city car and is described by the Swansway Motor Group as a car that “punches way above its weight class in terms of space and comfort”.
The latest generation model was first launched in 2007 and is particularly valued for its reliability and affordability.
As mentioned, the 1.0-litre petrol engine is crucial to staying in the low insurance groups and it is also considered one of the most affordable city cars on the market.
This was done because drivers were encouraged to look for a Hyundai hatchback that offers plenty of power for little money, but is also great for everyday use.
