Five things that stood out in the Chiefs’ loss to Detroit

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs returned home for their first football game in 217 days, but under light different circumstances.

In weather.

And import.

The Chiefs lost to the Detroit Lions 24-23 in their second preseason exhibition game, leaving them with just one game left before the season begins. They host Chicago next Thursday in a game that Patrick Mahomes likely won’t play.

There was a lot more of him in this film, including things we’ve never seen from him before.

A pass behind the back. Really.

You probably already know about this pass, but there was a lot more to learn from the Chiefs’ preseason game.

1. worthwhile from worthy

A week ago, the Chiefs prepared the first game of their preseason for Xavier Worthy.

During the encore they played many of them louder.

Worthy had the most active day of any Chiefs player, and that’s a flattering description for a receiver.

Active.

Worthy caught his first pass on the opening series, a 39-yard pass on a corner route that found him sneaking behind the defense, but he seemed to get off to a false start.

Later, he had complete freedom for a 22-yard touchdown pass, and that throw came from backup quarterback Carson Wentz, who got a lot of air under the ball because Worthy gave him plenty of room.

Speaking of which, that’s clearly a major advantage for Worthy. It was clear in the first two quarters that his speed could give some other receivers some space under a deep bowl.

The only downside? Worthy fumbled after a jet sweep. And while that may seem like a small detail given that this is a preseason game, those sweeps are a key part of Andy Reid’s offense, and Worthy is the player most likely to be used there. His size raises concerns about whether he can keep up in traffic up the middle.
