Five things to do in Memphis this weekend

Radian’s Amphitheater at the Memphis Botanic Garden

Classic rock legend John Fogerty takes over the stage at the Radians Amphitheater at the Memphis Botanic Garden for his Live at the Garden series. General admission tickets are $89.50 and can be purchased here.

As with every Live at the Garden concert, general admission seating is on the lawn on a first-come, first-served basis. Chairs will not be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own. Attendees are also permitted to bring their own outside food and beverages, including coolers. Food and beverages are available for purchase.

Parking and shuttles begin at 5 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m.

Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium Field

Saturday, August 10, 6 – 10 p.m.

The Memphis Chicken & Beer Festival brings together beer, chicken and fun. Tickets are $42 + tax and include admission to the event, a souvenir glass and all drink samples. There will be live music, plus yard games, bounce houses and more! Local restaurants will be offering food for purchase. You must be at least 21 years old to attend. The event benefits Merge Memphis, an organization that supports homeless women.

Soul & Spirit

Saturday, August 10, 1 p.m. – 7 p.m.

If you like beer, books and nostalgia, stop by Soul & Spirits Brewery on Saturday for the brewery’s second annual Skol-astic Adult Book Fair. In case you didn’t get the pun, Skol-astic is a play on childhood Scholastic book fairs, with “skol” being the Scandinavian word for “cheers.” Local bookstores — Burke’s Books, Cafe Noir, Demoir Books, Novel and Friends of the Library — will set up booths. Local authors will sign books and there will be a market for Memphis-made books, with a focus on makers of books.

Lafayette’s Music Room

Sunday, August 11, 2 p.m.

Elvis Week begins on Friday, and it wouldn’t be Elvis Week without Ronnie McDowell. McDowell will perform a tribute to the King in the Music Room at Lafayette, with special guest Amber Rae Dunn of the Royal Blues Band. He will sing some of his renditions of Elvis songs, along with his originals, some of which are dedicated to the man himself.

General admission tickets for “A Tribute to the King,” which is being filmed for an upcoming TV special, are $25. VIP admission is $100 and includes premium seating, a gift bag and a post-show meet-and-greet. Tickets can be purchased here or by phone at 901-207-5097 or in person at Lafayette’s Music Room.

PS: Our writer Michael Donahue caught up with McDowell before the show. Read what he had to say here.

Court Square Park

Sunday, August 11, 6 p.m.

Spice up your weekend with, well, some jazz. Free jazz, too, thanks to the Sunset Jazz at Court Square concert series. This weekend’s performance will be by Soul Ingredient, featuring some of the Memphis Jazz Workshop’s best young musicians in a powerful ensemble. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome. Grab a snack and a drink from one of the food trucks and sit down for an evening of great entertainment and prizes. Limited seating is available.
