Flood warning for Jersey Shore: Cold front heading toward New Jersey

The New Jersey coast will be hit by heavy rain on Sunday as severe thunderstorms move through the region and a coastal flood warning and flood watch remains in effect for residents.

According to the National Weather Service’s Mount Holly station, Ocean, western Monmouth, Middlesex, Atlantic and southeast Burlington counties could see up to a foot of flooding in low-lying and vulnerable areas when a cold front moves across New Jersey later Sunday.

A flood warning is in effect for residents of Monmouth County from 6 p.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Monday, with between 1 and 3 inches of rain expected. A coastal flood warning is in effect for Ocean County until midnight. Minor flooding is expected along Barnegat Bay and Sandy Hook during evening high tides on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Meteorologists predict that 10 cm or more of rain is possible in isolated areas.

According to the weather service, residents of flood-prone areas should expect road closures and make preparations.

Due to rip currents and rough surf, many beaches were closed to swimming Saturday as Tropical Storm Ernesto created dangerous swimming conditions in the eastern U.S. The threat of high rip currents remains through Monday evening.

Due to potentially dangerous water conditions, swimming was not permitted at Island Beach State Park on Sunday.
