Floyd Mayweather Jr. returns to the ring on Saturday for a rematch of his summer 2023 exhibition fight against John Gotti III, the grandson of the notorious crime boss.
Their first fight ended in chaos when the referee abruptly stopped the fight in the sixth round and Gotti continued to throw punches at Mayweather, leading to an in-ring brawl between the two fighters’ acolytes. Now, with Gotti serving a six-month suspension for his role in the chaos, they’re returning south of the border for a rematch.
“The main event between Mayweather and Gotti is a real fight,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, at a press conference. “I’ve had the opportunity to spend some time with the Gottis; (John Gotti III) means business. He’s here to fight. He’s talking about knocking out Floyd Mayweather, while 50 and more before him have tried and nobody has been successful, so I’m very skeptical that’s going to happen.”

Floyd Mayweather and John Gotti III faced each other for the first time in an exhibition fight in Florida in June 2023.
Although the fight was not scored and no official winner was declared, Mayweather made light work of Gotti for six rounds until the fight was stopped. Referee Kenny Bayless suddenly stopped the fight as Gotti was constantly holding him, causing chaos that spilled into the stands.
After the stoppage, Gotti continued to try to hit Mayweather, which led to both fighters’ acolytes jumping into the ring and causing chaos. Gotti was subsequently suspended for six months by the Florida State Athletic Commission.

Another change is that there will be no judges to officially score the fight. A final winner can only be determined by knockout. Although no winner was determined in the first fight, Mayweather dominated Gotti until the referee stopped the fight.

Although there are no judges officially scoring the fight on Saturday, exhibition fights often end with a clear winner. That was the case in the first fight, when Mayweather made light work of Gotti until the fight was stopped, and there is no reason to believe that won’t happen again in Mexico.
In the first fight, Mayweather danced around the ring and landed almost at will as he applied pressure while displaying his typically determined defense. Gotti is much younger and will be the bigger man in the ring, but Mayweather remains an extremely talented boxer who has remained active in the ring since his retirement. Gotti could provide more competition in the second fight, but in the end, Mayweather will dominate.
