Forget broccoli hair – teenagers now love the ‘Surfer Curtain’ haircut

This hair trend is the new trend.

Surfer Curtains – a beachy, textured men’s hairstyle with curtain-style bangs that frame the face – is becoming the hottest cut for teenagers.

The low-maintenance TikTok trend, which typically requires very little product and a little styling, was popularized by influencer Dillon Latham as well as celebrities like Timothée Chalamet and Charles Melton, whose wavy, center-parted hair has captivated the masses.

“It’s that Hollywood heartthrob hairstyle that we’re seeing right now,” Zumbo said. Getty Images

“It’s a surfer haircut paired with ’90s bangs,” stylist Andrew Zumbo told Parents, praising the “effortless” and “unstructured” look. “It’s the Hollywood heartthrob hairstyle we’re seeing right now.”

And the Y2K era style is becoming increasingly popular, according to hairstylist Kylee Heath.

“The surfer curtains trend is a cut that is generally parted in the middle or slightly off-center and worn with a beach-like texture,” she told PopSugar.

“The cut and style leave some length in the front, which is worn almost like a curtain bang that you can throw from left to right. This look also looks great when it’s a little tousled and has some volume and structure.”

The casual look is also relatively easy to achieve – “just spray a little (sea salt spray) on the head, swirl it around and you’re done,” Zumbo said.

The ease of styling is also a reason why teenagers are so keen to get a perm, with the “broccoli cut” – the predecessor to the “surfer curtain” – taking social media by storm. And those who don’t have curly or wavy hair but want the volume and shape of a tousled head of hair are paying hundreds for the treatment.

“Glossy magazines are being overshadowed by influencers who claim to be ‘just like us,'” Dr. Brooke Erin Duffy, a social media researcher at Cornell University, told Parents about the wave of hair trends online.

“(Social media) platforms assure us that it is easier than ever to achieve fame – after all, this narrative ensures a steady stream of content for their platforms.”
