Former Cardinals five-time Gold Glover available; Should St. Louis re-sign?

As the St. Louis Cardinals face the National League Central leaders Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday afternoon, more league news came to light that may be of interest to fans.

John Mozeliak, the Cardinals’ president of baseball operations, has managed to win back former St. Louis players who are now returning with great joy for the eleven-time World Series winner.

With the season winding down and the Cardinals five games out of an NL wild-card spot, Mozeliak has a chance to do it again and reunite with a former St. Louis outfielder who could make a splash.

“Sources: The (Los Angeles) Dodgers have designated for assignment Jason Heyward,” Fansided’s Robert Murray reported shortly after the Cardinals began the final game of their three-game series against the Brewers on Thursday afternoon.

Heyward had a .293 batting average with 50 extra-base hits, including 13 home runs, 60 RBIs and an OPS of .798 for the Cardinals during the 2015 season.

The 35-year-old is in his 15th season after playing for many organizations such as the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, Dodgers and Cardinals during his illustrious career.

This season, however, was not so favorable for Heyward’s career statistics, as he posted a slash line of .208/.289/.393 with just six home runs and 28 RBIs in 63 games for the Dodgers.

Bringing in Heyward makes sense for the Cardinals if they believe he could benefit from the change of scenery. The same strategy has worked for other St. Louis players – former talents who left the organization and found success elsewhere.

The Cardinals’ outfielders have been inconsistent at hitting in 2024, and perhaps adding Heyward would boost the performance of the younger players. However, there’s no guarantee he’ll do well if reunited with St. Louis, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Mozeliak lets the opportunity pass.
