Former Denver Broncos free agent released after strange tenure in Tampa

Former Denver Broncos outside linebacker Randy Gregory was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, just months after signing with the team, ending his brief tenure there and beginning a new chapter in Gregory’s strange personal journey.

Gregory filed a lawsuit against the NFL and the Denver Broncos in June, claiming discrimination. In April, he signed a one-year contract with the Bucs as a free agent. On July 23, he was placed on the reserve/do not report list and now, a month later, he has been released without pay for never reporting to the team.

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles told ESPN’s Jenna Laine that he had no idea why Gregory never reported to the team.

“I’ll never find out, but I wish him the best and we’ll move on from there. You can’t miss what you never had.”

It calls into question Gregory’s once promising and turbulent career.

Randy Gregory is one of the worst free agent signings in Broncos history

The Broncos signed Gregory to a massive five-year, $70 million contract in March 2022. General Manager George Paton ignored his troubled past with the Dallas Cowboys, which included several drug-related suspensions, when drafting the contract.

He was never even close to earning it.

He only played in 10 games for the Broncos, recording three total sacks. After a Week 4 win over the Chicago Bears last season, the Broncos released Gregory when players like Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper began to overwhelm him on the field.

He then signed with the San Francisco 49ers and eventually played in the Super Bowl. Now he seems to have decided to put his career on hold for reasons known only to him, and one has to wonder if he will ever play another down in the NFL.
