Former HGTV star Joanna Gaines reveals surprise in her son Drake’s college apartment

Joanna Gaines learned more about what her eldest son has been up to during college as she helped him move into his new apartment this week.

The former HGTV star shared a series of photos and videos on her Instagram Story, including one in which she pans over a device that she thought was a harmless game.

“Ring toss game to have fun,” she captioned the video, adding that her son corrected her and said, “Mommy, this is a drinking game.”

The tour of the room continued with photos of a refrigerator containing only a bottle of ranch dressing and the caption “Move-in day for college dorm.”

It was clear that the space had been put together with the trained eye of an interior designer as everything was beautifully decorated.

Besides Drake, Joanna and her husband Chip have four other children – Ella (17), Duke (16), Emmie (14) and Crew (6). They rose to fame on HGTV’s home improvement show Fixer Upper and have since launched their own lifestyle magazine, a line of home and lifestyle products and even their own television network. They have published cookbooks, home design books and children’s books.

Joanna managed to sneak one of her books into her son’s bookshelf, joking that she “sneaked it in there to add some colour.”

She also found a way to incorporate her son’s love of baseball into the room’s decor by hanging a famous Babe Ruth quote on the wall: “Never let fear of a strikeout keep you from playing.”

There was also a quote from Babe Ruth and a picture of the two of them together hanging on the wall of the room.

In November 2023, Chip and Joanna opened up about what it was like sending their son to college, telling People that sending a child to college and having a five-year-old toddler was “the greatest gift” for them because it gave them a different perspective on parenting.

“When you consider Drakey going off to college, you turn your attention to Crew, who is at the bottom of all of this,” Chip told People. “And you kind of live very consciously because you know — which is so hard to believe when you’re holding a one-year-old — ‘Oh, this time is going to go by fast.'”

He explained that it prompted him to “focus his attention on the little crew” and start “living as if he was going to college tomorrow.”

The couple recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary and told People in November 2023 that they have changed over the course of those 20 years.

“I would say the older we get, the more I change and the more I become like Chip. And Chip is becoming more and more like me,” Joanna explained.
