Former Mets fan favorite signs with NL wildcard competitor

The New York Mets will face an old friend on their upcoming brutal away trip.

After their series against the Baltimore Orioles, the Mets must travel back west to play six games in a row against the two best wildcard teams in the National League, the San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Once they reach Arizona, they will see a former fan favorite in the opposing dugout. On Tuesday, the Diamondbacks signed infielder Luis Guillorme to a major league contract, Daniel Alvarez-Montes from El Extrabase reported for the first time.

After stints with NL East rivals Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels, this will be Guillorme’s third other team in the 2024 season.

Guillorme signed a one-year, $1.1 million contract with the Braves in the offseason and made their opening day roster as an all-around infielder. However, the versatile Guillorme lasted just 10 games in Atlanta before being traded to the Angels on May 9 for a player to be named later.

Guillorme played 51 games for the Angels, but posted a weak .231 batting average and .600 OPS in 104 at-bats. Los Angeles released him on August 18, and two days later he was signed by the injury-plagued Diamondbacks.

Arizona recently lost All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte to a sprained ankle, so signing another infielder makes sense.

Guillorme, who spent six seasons (2018-2023) as a regular all-around infielder with the Mets, now gets the chance to get revenge on his former team.

The Diamondbacks currently hold the second NL wild-card spot, 4.5 games ahead of the Mets, who are underdogs entering Tuesday night’s game.
