The legal troubles of a former Ohio State University quarterback have continued with a new drug possession charge.

A Franklin County grand jury indicted 64-year-old Art Schlichter on Friday on charges stemming from a traffic stop in February during which an Ohio Highway Patrol trooper found suspected cocaine in Schlichter’s vehicle.

His arraignment appearance is scheduled for September 3 in Franklin County Court.

In a video of the incident, Schlichter is seen standing next to a broken-down vehicle near the intersection of East Hudson Street and Hamilton Avenue. A police officer approaches Schlichter, and while Schlichter tries to call someone to pick him up, the officer notices what appears to be drug paraphernalia in the car.

As the video shows, Schlichter also gave the police officer two glass pipes during the altercation.

The officer found the suspected cocaine during a search of the vehicle. A video of the traffic stop shows Schlichter telling the officer twice that he plays football for Ohio State.

Schlichter was initially charged with this crime in Franklin County Municipal Court, but the charges were dropped while additional tests were conducted to confirm that the substance found in Schlichter’s vehicle was cocaine.

At the time of the February 2 incident, Schlichter was on probation for cocaine possession. This case occurred after Schlichter was found unconscious in a hotel room near Hilliard in June 2022.

Schlichter had been released from prison less than a year before the overdose after serving a sentence for a traffic ticket scam that cost victims millions of dollars.

Schlichter played for Ohio State from 1978 to 1981 before playing four seasons in the NFL.
