Former Richmond woman arrested after fatal overdose in Wayne County

RICHMOND, Ind. – A former Richmond woman with a history of drug-related convictions has been charged with trafficking the fentanyl that led to a fatal overdose in Wayne County.

Kimberly Jo Smith, who celebrates her 53rd birthday on Wednesday, was arrested on Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio, where she currently lives.

She is preliminarily charged with trafficking a controlled substance causing death, a Level 1 felony that carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.

She was arrested during a joint operation between the Richmond Police Department’s Narcotics Enforcement Team and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies in Ohio.

The former Hoosier remained held at the Montgomery County Jail in Dayton on Wednesday, awaiting extradition to Indiana.

In a press release, Richmond Police Chief Kyle Weatherly said, “This is a clear warning: We will not tolerate anyone bringing this toxic drug into our community.”

The Wayne County District Attorney’s Office will decide what formal charges will be filed.

According to Wayne County court records, Smith was convicted of cocaine trafficking (twice), forgery, fraud, theft and embezzlement, among other charges.
