Former UNC star Drake Maye shines in first NFL preseason finale

There is no more important position for a football team than that of quarterback.

This is especially true for teams like the New England Patriots, who have experienced several mediocre seasons in recent years after decades with future Hall of Famer Tom Brady.

Hoping to overcome this recent mediocrity, New England selected Drake Maye with the third overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft. After two seasons at North Carolina, Maye was named the 2022 ACC Player of the Year and became eligible for the Heisman Trophy.

The Patriots brought in NFL veteran Jacoby Brissett so Maye could learn from him, but if the preseason is any indicator of who will start in Week 1, the tide could turn in Maye’s favor.

In New England’s most recent preseason game on Sunday, August 25, in a 20-10 loss at the Washington Commanders, Maye completed 13 of 20 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown.

This ended a successful preseason for Maye, who scored a total of 192 passing yards and two touchdowns in three games.

Compare Maye’s preseason to Brissett’s, who completed just 5 of 14 passes for 36 yards and an interception. If Brissett is to be given the benefit of the doubt, he was most recently a long-term starter for the Cleveland Browns in 2022, while Maye played in every game except the Dukes’ Mayo Bowl last year.

With the Patriots desperately needing a productive quarterback, Maye seems like the obvious choice for the starting position.
