A former Wayne County Jail inmate has filed a $20 million lawsuit against the county and sheriff’s office, alleging she was sexually assaulted twice by a correctional officer in 2018.
The Finger Lakes Times reported on the lawsuit on Monday, and it was filed in Wayne County State Supreme Court by the New York law firm Slater Slater Schulman.
It alleges that the woman, identified as KG, was abused while she slept in her cell on March 22 and April 12, 2018. The lawsuit was initially dismissed due to a misinterpretation of the Adult Survivors Act, but has since been refiled.
The plaintiff’s attorney, Adam Slater, claims that the prison has a history of widespread sexual abuse of female inmates and that the sheriff’s office has failed to address the issue. The sheriff’s office has not commented publicly on the matter.
