WARSAW – A Fort Wayne man was arrested for allegedly engaging police in a chase when they smelled marijuana in his vehicle.

Brian Tekoa Lockhart, 46, of Fort Wayne, is charged with resisting police (a Level 6 felony), driving under the influence and endangering a person (a Class A misdemeanor), and possession of marijuana (a Class B misdemeanor).

On August 22, an Indiana State Police trooper was patrolling the area of ​​US 30 and Anchorage Road in Warsaw when he saw a vehicle traveling 73 mph in a 50 mph zone. The patrol officer stopped the vehicle and identified its driver as Lockhart.

According to court documents, the officer smelled marijuana and noticed that Lockhart was exhibiting physical signs of intoxication. When the officer asked Lockhart and a passenger to exit the vehicle, Lockhart put the car in gear and stared straight ahead, then fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

A chase began. Lockhart overtook vehicles on the shoulder, weaving through traffic and ignoring a stop sign. The officer lost sight of the vehicle.

A Warsaw police officer located the vehicle and continued the pursuit while a Winona Lake police officer deployed stop sticks. Lockhart hit the stop sticks and stopped in the area of ​​US 30 and CR 250E.

When officers searched Lockhart’s vehicle, they found marijuana and two THC gummy bears.

Lockhart told officers he smoked marijuana three hours before the pursuit and took possession of the marijuana in the vehicle. Lockhart’s certified chemical test results are pending.

Lockhart has already been arrested and released on bail.
