Frankie Capan III’s recent runner-up finish puts North Oaks’ product on the brink of a PGA Tour card – Twin Cities

It’s not official – at least not quite yet.

The PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour use conservative calculations to announce when a player has earned a PGA Tour card, which is awarded to the top 30 players in the Korn Ferry Tour season standings at the end of the year.

Frankie Capan III of North Oaks, Minnesota, is 12th on the season list after finishing second at the Magnit Championship on Sunday in Jackson, New Jersey.

The 24-year-old has two second-place finishes and three top-five finishes this season. His performance this weekend saw him score 184 points, raising his mark for the season to 1,013. In past seasons, that total would have been enough to easily place him in the top 30. He has a nearly 400-point lead over the 31st-ranked golfer in the standings.

There are four events left in the tour season, which ends with the Korn Ferry Tour Championship in French Lick, Indiana, from October 3-6.

Capan was in the final round for the third time this season on Sunday, but he struggled on the first nine holes, shooting a 1-over-par 37 and seemingly out of contention.

But Capan was really good over the last nine holes with birdies on the 11th, 12th and 13th holes and capped off his tournament with a birdie on the 18th hole to move to 15-under-par 273 for the week and share second place with Ricky Castillo, Tim Widing and Will Chandler. Max McGreevy, who is second on the season points list, won with 18-under-par 270 after shooting 3-under-par 69 on Sunday.

Given Capan’s recent birdie, it’s probably a matter of when – rather than if – the Tour announces that Capan’s place on the top professional tour next season is secured.
