Free art therapy program for Parkinson’s patients and caregivers in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – A free art therapy program is available for people diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers.

Connecting Through Art is a creative arts program that provides the space and opportunity for people with Parkinson’s disease to express feelings, emotions, and everyday concerns through art. While all of these aspects have been shown to improve mood and quality of life, the activity itself can help improve visual-cognitive skills, manual dexterity, and overall motor function, according to the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA).

Sara Peters, a licensed professional counselor and art therapist, will guide participants through a silk frame painting project. She will also share information about the benefits of making art, how to engage in expressive arts, and mindfulness tips for the creative process.

The Connecting Through Art course will be held on Thursday, September 5, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the UT Health San Antonio Medical Arts and Research Center (MARC) building at 8300 Floyd Curl Drive.

This free event is open to all adults diagnosed with Parkinson’s and their care partners. To register, please contact Angela Quiroz-Saenz, LMSW, at 210-450-9947 or email [email protected]. Registration is required and art supplies will be provided free of charge.

The event is sponsored by the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) and UT Health San Antonio.
