Residents looking to explore their creative side have the opportunity to do so, as the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) is offering free art workshops on Saturday, August 31.
The workshops are part of the ongoing exhibition “Jamaica Flux Workspaces and Windows” and will take place from 12pm to 4pm at the King Manor Museum, Jamaica Ave. 150-03.
Jamaica Flux (JFLX), a contemporary public art project, has been exhibiting visual and performance art along Jamaica Avenue since July. This year’s exhibition includes a variety of works, including fragments of a sneaker sculpture, video essays featuring personal experiences of life in Jamaica, Queens, and photographic references to the borough’s unique fashion scene.
JFLX participating artists Noah Bassman and Olivia Brown will lead the workshops. Bassman will lead participants in the Visions For Jamaica Workshop, where they will create original drawings inspired by the local neighborhood. Participants will learn the fundamentals of landscape and cityscape drawing, allowing them to reimagine their surroundings through an artistic lens.
Brown’s Plant and Paint workshop focuses on fighting local hunger by promoting home gardening. Participants will receive vegetable seeds, flower pots, art supplies and aprons, as well as bags to carry their creations home. In addition, information cards about each vegetable and links to additional resources will be provided.
These workshops provide a unique opportunity for community members to engage with art while contributing to local initiatives. The events are free and open to the public.
