Free back-to-school haircut event gives many FCPS students confidence

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Many students in Fayette County are preparing to go back to school this week.

Some get a new look at the beginning of the year.

On Sunday afternoons, when most people are relaxing at home, Ahmad Qadah goes to his hairdresser to freshen up his children’s haircuts for free to mark the start of the school year.

“I’m just the type of person that likes to give back,” he said. “Wherever I see all the kids gathering with smiles on their faces, it’s like the community needs more things like that.”

That’s why he knew he wanted to host a community event with lots of food and bouncy castles when he opened his hair salon eXotic CutZz three years ago.

This way the children can enjoy a nice summer day before going back to school.

“I see this as a big day for the kids and it’s just a good thing to keep the community together and keep the exchange going,” Qadah said.

He said providing a fun environment as well as free haircuts and braiding classes for the children will give them more confidence to return to school.

Qadah said that sometimes a haircut can completely change a person’s life, even if it’s just a chair conversation.

“A haircut really defines a person, as I’ve seen before,” he said. “I’ve been cutting hair for about seven years now and I’ve always seen smiles on people’s faces when they’ve finished their haircut.”

That was exactly the case with Ezekiel Roland, who had a smile on his face after his very first haircut.

Now he can’t wait to show it off on his first day of kindergarten next week.

“It was so good,” Roland said about his new haircut.

Qadah says they plan to come back next year to give out even more free and fresh cuts.
