If you’ve been trying to limit your screen time but still find yourself falling victim to mindless scrolling, it may be time to take more drastic measures – like putting your phone in a locked box behind a screen.

For those willing to take that step, a Milwaukee brewery is offering a phone-free Friday every month throughout the summer, with one of them happening this week.

According to Visit Milwaukee, 30 to 40 percent of regulars have participated in Broken Bat Brewing Company’s No Phone Fridays. For people who give up their cell phones, the brewery offers free drinks and access to bar games, among other things. The event also asks for donations to Mental Health Wisconsin.

“It’s a simple exchange, but a meaningful gesture,” Broken Bat founder Tim Pauly said in a statement. “Whether it’s 20 minutes or the entire stay, we want to reward guests’ engagement with easy, fun ways to connect with one another.”

Here’s everything you need to know about No Phone Fridays, from the logistics of the phone locker to the chance to win a free hot dog grill.

Where do the Phone Free Fridays take place?

The events are hosted by Broken Bat Brewing Company, 135 E. Pittsburgh Ave.

When are phone-free Fridays?

This week, No Phone Friday will take place on August 30th from 12pm to 10pm at Broken Bat.

The brewery also hosted the all-day, phone-free event in June and July. If you miss it this week, Broken Bat has scheduled a final Phone-Free Friday on September 27 at the same times.

It is not yet known whether the monthly event will continue beyond the summer.

How can you participate in No Phone Fridays?

No tickets or reservations are required to participate in No Phone Fridays. Just show up and drop off your phone.

Attendees must leave their phones in a clear locker prominently located behind the bar. In return, you’ll receive a number card for your phone, a voucher for a free second drink after opening a bill, and free access to darts, pool, cards, and other games.

When you want to plug back in, hand over your number card to get your phone back. You can be without a phone for as long or as short as you like.

If you think someone needs to reach you during the phone-free hours, you can give them the taproom’s landline number in advance, according to the event’s Facebook page. The number is (414) 316-9197.

Brats, Prizes and Giveaways at No-Phone Fridays

This month, Broken Bat is teaming up with Wisconsin sausage maker Johnsonville to host No-Phone Friday, a Friday where Johnsonville bratwursts will be served at the brewery from 4-7 p.m.

In addition, the company is also giving away attractive prizes as part of the event, ranging from gift baskets to product vouchers and even a sausage grill.

“We’re big fans of people hanging out together in real life,” said Jamie Schmelzer, senior director of marketing at Johnsonville, in a statement. “We applaud everyone involved in these events for making such a conscious effort to make time for fun and togetherness.”
