Free Will Astrology: Your weekly horoscope from August 30th to September 5th – Columns

Astrology of free will

VIRGO (23 August – 22 September): When a baby giraffe leaves the womb, it falls six feet to the ground. I suspect that you, Virgo, will experience a gentler and more pleasant jolt when you are soon reborn. It may even be quite thrilling and inspiring – and not at all rough and tumble. Incidentally, the baby giraffe’s fall ruptures its umbilical cord and stimulates the animal to take its first breaths – preparing it for the beginning of its life’s journey. I suspect your pleasant jolt will bring comparable benefits.

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22): Many people in the Napo province of Ecuador enjoy eating a dish called Subscribea Kichwa word for large ants. This is not an exotic meal for them. You can Subscribe or simply eat the animals alive. If you travel to Napo soon, Libra, I urge you to Subscribe. According to my interpretation of the astrological signs, such an experiment is in line with the kind of experiences you should seek as a Libra: outside your usual habits, beyond your typical expectations, and in amused rebellion against your usual way of doing things.

SCORPIO (October 23-November 21): Karma theory states that all of our actions, good or bad or in between, send ripples out into the world. These ripples eventually return to us, causing us to experience events that reflect our original actions. When we lie and cheat, we are lied to and cheated. When we give generously and speak kindly of other people, we become recipients of generosity and kind words. I mention this, Scorpio, because I believe you will soon reap a lot of good karma that you have set in motion through your generosity and kindness. It may sometimes seem like you are receiving more goodwill than you deserve, but in my estimation, you have earned it.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21): I encourage you to buy yourself fun gifts that will give you a lively boost. Why? Because I want you to bring an innovative, fresh spirit to the projects you’re working on. Your attitude and approach could become too serious if you don’t infuse them with the lively energy of an excited child. Gift suggestions: new music that makes you feel wild; new jewelry or clothes that make you feel brave; new tools that boost your confidence; and new information that inspires your creativity.

CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19): On a Tuesday in August 2012—a full Jupiter cycle ago—a friend of mine born under the sign of Capricorn called in sick from his job as a marketing specialist. He never returned. Instead, after a week of recuperation, he began studying to become a dance instructor. After six months, he was teaching beginners. Three years later, he was competent enough to teach advanced, and five years later, he was an expert. I’m not advising you, Capricorn, to quit your job and start your own whimsical quest for highly fulfilling work. But if you ever want to take baby steps toward that goal, now would be a good time. It’s also an opportune period to improve the way your current job works for you.

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): Three years ago, an Indonesian man celebrated his wedding with a rice cooker, a kitchen accessory. Khoirul Anam wore his finest clothes, while his new wife donned a white veil. In photos posted on social media, the happy couple can be seen embracing and kissing. Now could be an opportune time for you, too, to tie your wealth more closely to a valuable resource—though it’s not necessary to have a literal wedding. What material thing helps bring out the best in you? If you don’t have one, now would be a good time to get it.

PISCES (February 19 – March 20): For many years, I didn’t make enough money to pay taxes. I was destitute. Fortunately, social programs provided me with food and some medical care. In recent years, however, I’ve had better cash flow. I regularly send a portion of my income to the U.S. government. I wish they would spend all of my tax contributions to help people in need. Unfortunately, only 42% of my taxes go to acts of kindness toward my fellow man, while 24% goes to funding the largest military machine on Earth. Maybe someday there will be an opportunity to distribute my tax donations exactly the way I want. With that in mind, Pisces, I invite you to take stock of the gifts and blessings you’re giving out. Now is a good time to correct questionable priorities. Take steps to ensure your generosity goes where it’s most needed and appreciated. What kind of giving makes you feel the best?

ARIES (March 21 – April 19): Although there are over 7,000 varieties of apples, your grocery store probably doesn’t offer more than 15. But you shouldn’t feel deprived. Having 15 alternatives is great. In fact, most of us do better with a minimum of choice than a lavish abundance. This is true not just for apples, but for most things. I mention this, dear Aries, because now is an excellent time to narrow down your options with all of your resources and influences. You will function best when you are not overwhelmed by possibilities. You will succeed when you experiment with the principle that less is more.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20): Comedian Jerry Seinfeld, now 70, a Taurus, has testified, “As a kid, my only clear thought was, ‘Get some candy.'” I encourage you to be just as single-minded in the near future, Taurus. Not necessarily about candy—but about treats that appeal to your inner child as well as your inner teenager and your inner adult. You are empowered by cosmic forces to seek out experiences that tickle your happiness.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20): I’m not saying I would refuse to hire a Gemini to house-sit while I’m on vacation. You probably wouldn’t let my houseplants die, raccoons sneak in and steal food, or leave piles of unwashed dishes in the sink. On the other hand, I’m not entirely sure you would take impeccable care of my home in every way. But wait a minute! Everything I just said, not apply to you now. My analysis of the omens suggests that you will have a high aptitude for the domestic arts in the coming weeks. You will probably take better care of my home than usual – and your own too. It is a good time to redecorate and freshen up the atmosphere.

CANCER (June 21 – July 22): These days, you are even smarter and more alert than usual. The deep intelligence of your higher self is streaming into your awareness with added intensity. That’s a good thing, isn’t it? Yes, most of the time. But it can have a downside: You might be overly aware of people whose thinking is mediocre and whose judgment is poor. This could be frustrating, but it also puts you in a good position to correct those people’s mistakes. As you use the healing power of your wisdom, heed these words from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: “Misunderstanding and lethargy bring more injustice into the world than deceit and malice.”

Leo (July 23 – August 22): Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had an older sister born under the sign of Leo. Her nickname was Nannerl. In childhood, she was as much a musical prodigy as he was. Under their father’s supervision, they toured Europe, performing together on the harpsichord and piano. Nannerl occasionally found herself in the spotlight, and some critics considered her the greatest talent. But misfortune struck when her parents decided it was unbecoming for her, as a woman, to continue her development as a genius. She was forcibly retired so she could learn the art of housekeeping and prepare for marriage and children. Your task in the coming months, Leo, is to rebel against any influence that tempts you to suppress your gifts and specialties. Assert your sovereignty. Find out what you do best, and do it more and better than ever before.
