SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – French Hospital has been honored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services with a rare award among public hospitals.

Dignity Health French Hospital Medical Center is honored to announce that it is the only hospital in the state of California to be awarded a Five Star Rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and to receive an “A” rating for Hospital Safety from The Leapfrog Group for 25 consecutive years.
French Hospital in San Luis Obispo is one of only eight hospitals in the country to simultaneously hold these highest patient safety awards.
“These awards are a tremendous validation of the outstanding, high-quality care provided by French Hospital’s staff and physicians,” said Sue Andersen, President and CEO. “These prestigious third-party accolades confirm French Hospital’s position as a leader in quality healthcare on the Central Coast.”
CMS annually reviews hospitals across the country and assigns star ratings to them based on their performance in five quality categories, including mortality, safety of care, readmissions, patient experience, and timely and effective care. The overall rating indicates how well each hospital performed compared to other hospitals in the U.S. on a set of quality criteria. The more stars, the better a hospital performed on the available quality criteria.
French Hospital is the only hospital in San Luis Obispo County rated five stars by CMS.

The Leapfrog Group awarded French Hospital an “A” grade for the 25th consecutive year earlier this year – meaning the hospital has received an “A” grade in patient safety in every evaluation cycle from 2012 to 2024.
The Leapfrog Group rates all general hospitals across the country based on more than 30 national performance indicators that take into account errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the loss prevention systems in place at hospitals.
Only 15 hospitals in the country have received an “A” grade from the Leapfrog Group 25 times in a row, and French Hospital is one of only two hospitals in California to have received exclusively “A” grades in every rating cycle since 2012.
