Fundraiser crowns free trade fair | News, Sports, Jobs

To attract more people to the Firebrick for Firefighters area at the fair, Alpensterne performed from 12 to 4 p.m.

NEW ULM – Sunday was Schells’ day at the fair and they used the day to give back to the community.

Several attractions and events were held to raise as much money as possible for the New Ulm Fire Department. Firebrick beer was available throughout the day, with $1 going to area firefighters for every beer sold. Raffle tickets were available to win smaller prizes such as t-shirts, signs, hats, buckets and can coolers.

The main event began at 3 p.m. There was a live auction of fire department-themed wood carvings. Wood carvings made during the fair were auctioned off to the highest bidder. On the fire department side, there were experiences to be won such as a ride in a fire truck and a night at the station. Schell’s sponsored its own prize: a private brewery tour with Schell’s Vice President Kyle Marti.

LuAnn Marti, a board member of the Brown County Fair, said they always planned to find a suitable organization to give back to during the fair.

“We wanted to give something back to the community,” she said. “We partnered with Schell’s and wanted to find an organization that was more than worth the donations. We chose the New Ulm Volunteer Fire Department.”

Terry Johnson writes his name on the list to be entered into a raffle to benefit the New Ulm Fire Department.

Marti said the fundraiser was an opportunity to come together and celebrate the festivities they were hosting while supporting a good cause. To make sure as many people as possible came to the Firebrick area, they hired New Ulm favorite band Alpensterne to perform from noon to 4 p.m. Marti said the response was phenomenal.

“The weather is perfect,” she said. “A lot of people come and help support the local communities.”

Getting all the prizes and auction items was a community effort. Marti said they worked with the fire department on ideas for prizes. She said they already have several ideas, which would be tempting to make it a painless and rewarding experience.

When asked why they chose the last day of the fair for this, Marti said it was the perfect finale for a fair built on camaraderie and community spirit.

“This is a nice conclusion to the fair,” she said. “(Perfect) time to come together, have a nice celebration and time together and support the local fire department.”
