Funnel cake better than pork chop

The Nebraska State Fair kicked off on Friday. While the Grand Island Independent team visits the fairgrounds for stories and photos, we will also be posting reports on the various culinary offerings at the fair.

The best food I ate at the State Fair on Friday was a red velvet funnel cake.

I bought the cake at Gourmet Funnel Cakes, near the entrance to the State Fair.

Gourmet’s specialty cakes cost $14 each. The other flavors are birthday cake, peanut butter cup, cookies and cream, turtle and chocolate.

The Red Velvet Cake, served hot and fresh, was exactly what you would expect. It was red and sprinkled with powdered sugar and was delicious. I would give it a 4 on the 5 point scale.

Gourmet Funnel Cakes is located right next to a fried ice cream booth that attracted some attention on the opening day of the show.

Also on Friday I tried the Tomahawk Pork Chop, which Hardenbrooks sells for $12.

I had never tried the pork chop before, so I was worried if the plastic knife and fork would be sturdy enough to cut it.

But I should have known – it’s handy. The only sharp object you need to eat it is your teeth.

Although it’s convenient to eat, the Tomahawk Pork Chop sounds a little better than it is. Some of the bites were very good, others were just average. I’d give it a 3 on a 5-point scale.

I kind of wish I had ordered a giant smoked turkey leg, which is also sold at Hardenbrooks.
