GA 197 North will be closed for repairs near Batesville

The Georgia Department of Transportation has announced that GA 197 North near Batesville will be closed on Sunday, August 25 for repairs to a cross drainage canal.

The repair work is expected to take between two and eight hours and will begin at 8 p.m.

According to Rob Moore, Habersham County spokesman, the detour will take travelers along county roads and connect them to GA 197.

Northbound traffic on GA 197 turns right onto Watts Mill Road and continues between Blackhawk Trophy Flyfishing and Mark of the Potter. Then the detour takes drivers left onto Raper Mountain Road and returns to GA 197 near the old Wikle Store.

Southbound traffic on GA 197 turns left onto Raper Mountain Road and then right onto Watts Mill Road to return to GA 197.

The cross-channel repair was originally scheduled for June, but was postponed by the Georgia Department of Transportation. Elizabeth Johnson, communications officer for the Department of Transportation’s District 1, says certain things had to be prepared in advance.

“Habersham County Emergency Services and the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office are aware of the closure and are prepared to respond to homes and businesses in the area if needed,” Moore says.
