HOUSTON – It rained on and off for a few days.
The region saw less precipitation on Wednesday, but that is expected to change Thursday morning as more tropical moisture moves into southeast Texas from the Gulf of Mexico.
A high pressure area in the northeast is helping to bring moisture into our area and quite heavy rainfall is expected in the next few days.
Thursday morning commute
Thunderstorms will move inland from the coastal counties from early Thursday morning. The storms are not expected to be very severe, but there may be thunder, lightning and extremely heavy rain at times.
These storms will cause quite a bit of chaos on the roads as they move through the area, so plan on allowing extra time to get to your destination. Right now, it looks like the heaviest rainfall is expected in coastal counties like Galveston and Chambers.
The first wave of storms should move through parts of Harris County around 8-9 a.m. After that, the majority of the rain should be confined to our coastal cities.
Rainfall and flood risk
The risk of rain will continue until Friday and further heavy rain is possible.
For this reason, a low flood risk has been established for coastal areas between Brazoria County, Galveston County and the Port Arthur area. Further inland, there is a low flood risk.
Heavy rain could occur over the next seven days, especially in coastal areas. 10 inches of rain is expected in Galveston.
Even further inland, rainfall amounts of three to four inches are not uncommon.
Be careful when driving in the next few days. Make sure you drive safely and take more time.
