Glasgow Fire Service currently installing Safe Haven Baby Box

GLASGOW, Kentucky (WBKO) – Families who have to give up their newborns already face a difficult decision. The Glasgow Fire Department wants to make the process a little easier by providing a place for the newborns in the form of a Safe Haven Baby Box.

This is a safety device that is installed on the outside of fire stations and hospitals so that babies can be found safely and quickly by first responders.

GFD announced that they would install the box in March and have now partially installed it on the side of Station One next to the sidewalk.

Chief Rock said the process was expensive and time consuming, but he saw a need for it in the community.

“I didn’t just make a quick decision. I thought long and hard and asked myself, ‘What are the downsides?’ And I couldn’t think of any downsides, really none,” he said. “A lot of people have had negative experiences with it and they don’t know what we experience in reality in emergency services.”

The box is not yet ready as it still needs to be wired and go through a testing phase. Rock said her sponsors from the Church of Christ have volunteered to help set up the box and get it ready for the community.

Rock hopes the baby box will be open by the time he retires on October 1.
