Google Home app updates Nest thermostat controls for some

For the new Nest Learning Thermostat, the Google Home app launches a redesigned page for controlling temperature and other settings. And as it turns out, this applies to older models too.

The new Google Home UI for the Nest Learning Thermostat more closely resembles the thermostat’s UI in the Home app itself, displaying details underneath including controls for heating or cooling, the current indoor temperature and humidity, and more.

While one might reasonably assume that the new UI would only be available on the updated model, this does not seem to be the case.

The people at Android Police Noticed on an older generation Nest Thermostat that it suddenly shows the updated Google Home app UI. There is no mention of which thermostat is being used here, but it is one from the old Nest app, so not the 2020 model that sells for $129. Our best guess based on the UI is that this is from the Nest Thermostat E.

Update 15.08.: As the debut of Google’s new Nest Learning Thermostat draws ever closer, this new interface is rolling out to more and more users of older Nest Thermostat models. In the last few days, we’ve received reports that many more users are seeing the updated design. Supported models include the Nest Thermostat 2020 and Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen), so it seems the updated interface will be available for all thermostats.

It’s worth noting that the 2015 Nest Learning Thermostat, like the new model, displays temperature sensors in the Home app (see image above).

We’ve added some user screenshots of the updated UI to the gallery below. This update appears to be rolling out server-side, but isn’t available to all users yet.

In addition to the updated Controls page, the temperature controls on the Favorites page have also been updated with a larger design that provides the ability to adjust the temperature without accessing the full Controls page.

Google’s new Nest Learning Thermostat is available for pre-order now for $279 and will ship later this month.
