If there’s a particular person or group of people you’d rather not be reminded of, the last thing you want is for Google Photos’ reminders feature to resurface images of them – as if to say, “Hey, remember that thing you’d rather not think about?” Well, the good news is Google gives you a little more control about this process.
The idea behind the Memories feature is to help you reconnect with your past. Instead of burying those photos in the depths of your photo library, they can resurface and remind you of the good old days when rent was cheap and nobody knew what an influencer was.
But not all reminders are good, and there are probably things we’d rather not be reminded of out of nowhere—like some kind of emotional shock moment. Google took steps to make sure that doesn’t happen by allowing users to block people or things from the reminders feature back in 2021. That was an all-or-nothing deal, and since humans are fickle, that’s not always the right course of action. So this latest change is something of a middle ground: You can see less of someone without outright blocking them from future appearances.
The new feature is simply called “show less” and means that a particular person won’t be shown nearly as often as they otherwise would have been. Crucially, it’s not a blanket block for that person.
Whether it’s a friend or relative who has passed away, or an ex with whom you had good times even if things didn’t work out, they won’t disappear from your memories forever.
The best part is that the whole process is also very easy to set up. Here’s how:
Open Google Photos settings
Go to Google Photos > Photo Settings > Settings > Memories. There you will see the options to “Hide data” or “Hide people and pets”. Tap the latter.
Choose how you want to categorize unwanted faces
The final menu has two Select areas Options, one under Show less and another under Blocked. This gives you the option to choose which faces you want to put into which category. Hopefully this makes the Memories feature a little more convenient for everyday viewing.
The Show Less feature is now available in the latest version of Google Photos. If you can’t see it, make sure you’ve updated through the App Store. If that still doesn’t work, you may just need to be patient and wait for Show Less to be available on your phone.
