Google is embroiled in a $5 million lawsuit after a crypto wallet app downloaded from the Play Store allegedly turned out to be malicious, resulting in the theft of significant digital assets. The victim, Maria Vaca, claims she lost her cryptocurrency holdings after trusting a seemingly legitimate wallet application.
Vaca has filed suit against Google in a California court, accusing the tech giant of negligence for allowing such a dangerous app to be available on its platform. The suit questions Google’s responsibility to protect its users from fraudulent applications, a growing problem with numerous similar incidents reported.
Crypto scams on the Play Store are nothing new. In April 2024, Google itself sued several fraudulent crypto apps and exchanges that had reportedly defrauded over 100,000 people worldwide. These apps allegedly used false identities and misleading information to bypass Google’s security checks, highlighting the ongoing threat of malware in the crypto space.
Legal experts believe the outcome of Vaca’s case will largely depend on whether Google knew about the scam app and how long it left the app available for download. Andrew Dressel, a well-known crypto litigator, pointed out that the key to the case is that Google knew about the malicious nature of the app and how it responded to such threats.
Vaca’s attorney Chris Vernon stressed that this incident is part of a larger trend in crypto thefts and emphasized the need for stronger app monitoring and better regulatory frameworks. As the digital economy grows, the responsibility of tech giants like Google to protect users’ assets has never been more important.
