Governor of Oklahoma on the housing crisis and price gouging

(CBS, KYMA/KECY) – Gov. Kevin Stitt (R-OK) spoke with Margaret Brennan on Sunday on “Face the Nation” about the Harris campaign’s proposal for first-time homebuyers.

“First of all, there are so many programs out there right now for first-time home buyers, and (my question is), and this is a great question for Vice President Harris, who’s going to build the three million homes? I mean, basically we either believe in a free market system or we believe in government intervention, and so the bottom line is you’re going to drive up costs. The reason we have 20% inflation right now under a Biden-Harris administration is because of all the attacks on energy, for example, the bureaucracy we need to enable reform, we need deregulation. We need to give American companies the ability to meet the needs of Americans. Basically, when communities stop new construction based on lot sizes and for first-time home buyers. That’s what you need to do. By spending more money and giving… think about that for a minute, that ticket, and I know Governor Walz, I’m friends with him in the National Governor’s Association. He’s a nice guy. I’ve met Vice President Harris a few times. She seems like a nice person, but if you look at the Democratic candidates, they’ve never worked in the private sector… it shows in their policies. You can’t give every first-time home buyer $25,000 and expect housing prices to go down. That’s just not how the economy works. That’s socialism. That’s communism.”

During the interview, Brennan and Stitt discussed why the latter opposes federal restrictions on price gouging, even though there are restrictions in his state.

“We talk at the state level about how if there’s a natural disaster, say a tornado goes through one of our communities, we don’t want people coming from out of state and inflating the prices of roofing materials. So if I issue an executive order and say this part of the state is affected, it’s only for a short period of time. Maybe for a month, and that’s just to protect people from people who are really trying to make money off of this disaster. So that’s totally different than what I think Vice President Harris is recommending from this administration. So she’s saying here’s the problem that doesn’t make sense to the American people, and you need to question her on that. OK… she’ll tell grocery stores the maximum price they can pay for milk is $1.99. But what happens to farmers when the cost is higher?”
