Great article in the Chattanooga Times Free Press today.

I’m going to type this out since this screenshot doesn’t work. From Chattanooga Times Free Press.

What would my father do? I grew up in Chattanooga, where my father, Lamar Baker, a conservative Republican, lived in the early 1970s. He served local citizens in a way that reflected his personal values of honesty, respect and kindness. At first he was a loyal supporter of Richard Nixon, whose policies he supported. In 1974, that changed.

After listening to the Watergate tapes, he concluded that President Nixon was not the person he could support. My father was a devout Christian who lived out his values in everything he did. He concluded that Nixon did not have the character necessary to meet the needs of the nation. As it turned out, despite his loyalty to the Republican Party, his decision to turn away from Nixon came too late in the 1974 re-election campaign, which he did, as did many Republicans.

Fifty years later, my father is no longer with us, but if he were still with us, I am sure he would join others who have concluded that the current Republican Party candidate lacks the character and core values to lead our country. I know my father would base his decision on core Christian values. As the election approaches, I hope that others will value basic human values over loyalty to a party or its candidate in making their choice. I know my father would base his decision on the core Christian values that have guided him through life.”

Sincerely,

Edward L. Baker, Jr. MD, MPH

Former Deputy Surgeon General, U.S. Public Health Service, RADM (retired).
