Great things to do before summer is over

play

Just when you think summer on Cape Cod will last forever, someone pushes the August button and you know it’s time to get serious. Serious about fun!

We all know that candy season is coming to an end, so now is the time to pull out your August bucket list and get started.

This is, of course, a very personal quest and there are no wrong answers. For some, a campfire on the beach, a lobster in the rough or a peaceful swim in a dead ice hole is just what the August doctor ordered. For others, a long walk on the beach at sunset or a banana split is just the ticket.

But we thought we’d start this important conversation with a few of our favorites. Below you’ll find some of the things we’re putting on our August bucket list, and maybe you’ll find some fun too. Let’s get out there and enjoy the summer!

Visit the new Sandwich Boardwalk

The Sandwich Boardwalk’s glorious comeback is complete, a great turn of events for fans of the iconic walkway. A northeast storm in January 2022 dealt a knock-out blow to the previous boardwalk, and it took a while for the snazzy new one to be in place.

But it was worth the wait for the quarter-mile boardwalk to re-emerge. It passes through a salt marsh on the way to Town Neck Beach and offers some of the most breathtaking views on Cape Cod. If you don’t have a Sandwich beach sticker, plan to come after 5 p.m. (when you don’t need stickers to park). Parking is available at the end of Boardwalk Road or at the end of Wood Avenue in Sandwich.

Go to Wellfleet Drive-In

Stop streaming and drive to the Wellfleet Drive-In Theater! It’s a throwback to the golden era of the late 1950s, when 4,000 drive-in theaters blazed across the U.S. Today, there are about 300 left, and the only one on Cape Cod is in Wellfleet, where folks have been enjoying double features since 1957.

A fantastic snack bar offers movie theater staples like popcorn, candy, and nachos, and you can also enjoy hot dogs, burgers, and chicken fingers. Or head to the Milk Bar and grab some delicious ice cream. The atmosphere is fun and family-friendly, and the movie screen is huge! Address: 51 Route 6, Wellfleet.

Get the good stuff at a Cape Cod farmers market

It’s the season for the best produce of the year – juicy tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, delicious melons and more. And the best way to take advantage of the harvest is to head to a Cape Cod farmers market. Meet the pros, find out what’s growing and take home some deliciousness.

There are many weekly farmers markets on the Cape, held almost every day of the week and stretching from Falmouth to Provincetown. Check out the schedule at buyfreshbuylocalcapecod.org or read our handy online guide. It’s always a trip full of delicious discoveries!

Boogie board on a sea beach

Intrigued by the recent coverage of the Olympic surfers in Tahiti? Maybe it’s time to find out what all the fuss is about and have fun (or maybe a little less) on a boogie boarding adventure on a Cape Cod beach. You’ll need to rent or buy a boogie board, head to a beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and of course, follow the safety rules — start by consulting with the ever-helpful lifeguards. It’s great fun!

The best beaches for boogie boarding stretch from Orleans to Provincetown and include Nauset Beach in Orleans (sticker or daily fee), the beaches of Cape Cod National Seashore (Coast Guard Beach and Nauset Light Beach in Eastham, Marconi Beach in Wellfleet, Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro, and Race Point Beach in Provincetown (day admission fees). Most beaches in Wellfleet and Truro require a sticker.
